John Krasinski Homage

John Krasinski is a young and upcoming director. John is an actor turned director who got his big break on the television show The Office. John got the opportunity to director 3 episodes of the Office. However, it was his first movie that he directed Brief Interview with a hideous man that made him a director. The next movie he would be The Hollersin 2016. Both of these movies were low budget family movies. It was when John came across the script for the movie A Quiet Place that changed his career.John knew right away that he had to direct this movie because it was so unique. A Quiet Placeis the movie that took John from an actor turned director to a full-blown actor. The Quiet Placeis one of the highest grossing scary or horror films of all time. One of the reasons that this film was so received from the audience was because of the authenticity of the characters. He has played a character in all of his movies, but he doesn’t always give himself the lead. John always chooses the actors very carefully and when he believes that he can play the lead and make it genuine then he plays that role. In A Quiet Place, John plays a father opposite actress Emily Blunt. In real life, John is married to actress Emily Blunt and they have two kids. In the movie they play a married couple with two children. The choice to have his wife have a role in the movie is a huge game changer. I believe that the authenticity of the parents in the movie is so relatable and real that audience can just connect. John also cast Millicent Simmonds to play the young deaf girl in the movie. In real life Millicent lost her ability to hear when she was a baby. When watching the movie all of Millicent scenes are so believable because she has gone through similar things as her character. Another element that John adds to the movie is multi cross cutting. In the climax of the movie all of the characters are separated experience their own conflicts and challenges all at the same time. The movie is cut from character to character not giving the audience all of the important elements of what the character is experiencing. For example, the mother is giving birth and the monster is coming and then fireworks go off. Then the father comes up the stairs to where the mother was, and she is no longer in the bath tub. The husband is in tears when you see the mothers bloody had touch the shower glass door. So, in this example you miss the mother holding the baby, avoiding the monster, and getting into the shower. I think that this is genus because it helps create the suspense that a horror movie must have. As a viewer you ask yourself “where did the mother go. Did the monster kill the mother and her baby?” Most movies that use cross cutting only cross between two events, places, and character. This is a unique style of John Krasinski’s directing. John also knows what elements of a movie are the most important to get the story across to the audience the best. John knew that sound was going to be an important role in his movie A Quiet Place. As a director he made the decision to have about 5 minutes of dialogue in the entire movie as well as many moments of complete silence. A Quiet Placeis one of the only movies to have moment of complete silence not even any ambience playing. The reason silent moments are added is to play with perspective of the deaf girls’ character. You know when you are hearing what the young girl is when you hear nothing at all. John plays with sound perspective in the movie which is a huge distinctive style. For my project I want to play with sound perspective. I want to create a story that is believable when hearing all the sounds through different perspectives. My idea, so far is to have my main character with headphones and playing with the perspective of that character. I want to cut to the characters perspective then to a 3rdperson perspective in which the sound will be different. This will be a challenge because sound is probably my weakest skill, however, this will be a great way to improve my abilities.
